The Kalsan

• Kalsan Alliance

No one knows the origins of the Kalsan.

As rumor goes, Ju'Saahsan secretly created the Kalsan Alliance with two other Kalsan shortly after establishing the Mars TerraBase with Baron Gates I. Since then, the Kalsan have become an enigmatic organization of female scientists, diplomats, and soldiers for hire.

Some people believe the Kalsan are made of pure light energy, though this is just superstition. These "Warriors of Light" draw their abilities from advancements in modern technology that give them an incredible advantage over others. The Kalsan accomplish everything through technology, training, and determination.

Some Kalsan view themselves as a force of change to right the wrongs and injustices of worlds torn apart by greed, neglect, and corruption.

• Ke

Although cross-trained in the operation of all civilian and Baronial armaments, the Kalsan prefer the use of the Ke--the trademark "laser-edged" sword of the Kalsan.

Not only is the Ke the Kalsan's primary weapon, it is also a vital part of the Kalsan identity. Each Kalsan receives her own Ke upon graduation from the Citadel.

Each Ke is individually hand made in a secret Kalsan facility by master craftsworkers. Each master makes each Ke according to traditional patterns, although high ranking Kalsan can request special designs later in her career as a reward for "balanced service."

The Ke wristband contains conductors that channels energy to power the short-pulse laser that can sever nearly any material.

Kalsan and Ke

Due to regulations, called the Baronial Law, firearms are illegal in space. In space, a misplaced bullet can damage a computer system or possibly breech a hull. Gunfire can also cause fires to combustible materials in the oxygen rich environments. Due to these dangers, swords, axes, or short-range electroshock rifles are a necessity.

The Kalsan employ the twin blades of the Ke with deadly efficiency in the close quarters of  space travel or terraformed ecologies.

The blades are made from high-carbon steel. The grips are covered in a synthetic, kevlar-enhanced leather that is imbued with silicon carbide. The guards are milled from a titanium alloy.

Prismatic mirrors line the cutting edge of the Ke, which reflect a laser along the curve, forming the glowing edge the Ke. The edge produces some heat and is hot enough to shear through almost any material. When two Ke parry, the lasers are reflected along the edges of each, preventing the Ke from cutting through the other.

Ke require tremendous amounts of energy to power the laser edge. Self-recharging battery packs provide enough power to maintain the Ke's laser edge for hours of continuous work.

Once depleted, the Ke are still sharp enough to be lethally effective against unarmored targets. The scabbards of the Ke will recharge the battery packs using various methods in a few hours.

Contained in the guard and handle are a complex, multi-functioned electronics package. In addition to powering the Ke, the package also enables the Kalsan to modify the balance of the Ke to her personal preference.

An identification chip prevents others from using the sword, and additional functions are contained in a "Black Box" located in the pommel. The equipment is guarded by a short circuit feature if anyone other than a Kalsan technician attempts to open the equipment.

• Citadel Kesseke

The Kalsan train on a space station near Mercury called the Citadel Kesseke. Since the Citadel is so near the Sun, ordinary space-shuttles can not even begin to approach without sustaining serious damage from the Sun’s radiation and magnetism.

• Kalsan Wristbands

While wearing their Ke wristbands, the Kalsan are able to silently communicate over thousands of miles thanks to a molar implant transmitter device.

The Kalsan are also able to transport themselves to Kalsan outposts from Kalsan embassies almost instantly. They have special embassies where they conduct their business and manage their travels.

The Kalsan have developed special, magnetic boots that allow them to defy the weightlessness of space. These boots provide no benefit to non-Kalsan wearers who are not trained to use them with the Ke wristbands.

Ju'Saahsan

Ju'Saahsan ('zhü-sah-'sän) is the chief matriarch and leader of the Kalsan Alliance. At the Kalsan Citadel, she personally instructs the new recruits in the arts of war, craft, and diplomacy.

Her name in the Kalsan language she developed is S'S''saah, ke, ke saah ke but she uses Ju'Saahsan as her Baronspeak moniker. Ju'Saahsan was the first Kalsan, and personally counseled Baron Gates I--giving rise to a superstition that she has lived for countless generations. She vehemently denies that she has any special powers but fails to explain how she has lived for so long.

The Ju’Saahsan rarely leaves the Kalsan Citadel and is almost never seen in public. Instead she prefers to delegate her public relations to her Envoys across the Milky Way.

• Battlesong of the Kalsan

Gone are the heroes,

Gone are the changing seasons,

Gone are the memories of the past,

Gone with the place once called home.

Gone… but not forgotten.

The day will come when life on Earth flourishes again,

When the Earth shall be rebuilt from the ashes of greed, corruption, and neglect.

Until then,

The cry of hope,

The song of deliverance,

Shall be the ringing of swords,

Tempered in the blood of the galaxy.
