The Taihian people were already stricken with poverty, corruption, polution and hunger. Then the asteroid came.
Ever since a violent coup for independence from Val settlers, greedy and corrupt Moguls have exploited the Taihi system. When times of crisis arose, the Mogul leaders pocketed relief and aid money to build expensive retirement space stations in Eurysa Territory.
Conditions for the poor have always been destitute, and the people are considered the second poorest in the Galaxy. Beset by overwhelming debt, the poorest of the population is forced to eat cakes of wheat mush and salt because they cannot afford to buy food or grow it on the increasingly barren and polluted soil.
Recently, violent solar storms have become an almost yearly occurrence. Last week, an asteroid hit the station orbiting Citadel Au Kavaliro. It's a rare phenomenon where the station was practically knocked out of orbit. The station nearly collapsed but did not expose the inhabitants to deep space.
Taihi is not without its supporters. Hundreds of thousands of people saw the human cost of the tragedy and were moved to action. Countless people have contacted their baronies and volunteered their skills as medical professionals and peacekeepers to go down and alleviate the situation.
But the support seems to be complicated, as news sources report that almost none of it seems to be getting through a logistical nightmare. And with baronial and Mogul corruption, discrimination, and confusion coming from those who want to help, a bad situation has gotten worse.
In some ways, the confusion may be the worst culprit. Few facts are confirmed. It is believed the station shock was 7% in strength. The majority of the Gold Dauphin TerraBase on the Citadel Au Kavaliro was destroyed, but the exact percentage is not known. It is believed over 150,000 dead have been buried, but even the officials admit they will never know the exact number.
But these same officials are in charge of the trillions of credits of aid that is coming into the moon station. Any citizen that has been interviewed has stated that the expect little of the aid to reach them. Government corruption is some of the worst in the galaxy, and the insensitivity of their leaders has been one of the major reasons Taihi has seen 33 revolts in its short existence. The current Mogul has noticeably taken charge with fighting corruption, but public opinion is still undecided as to whether or not he has transferred that love of justice into the present situation.
The final injustice in this mesh of confusion and corruption is the discrimination. Aid workers have had limited access to certain areas because of the belief that the Taihians are starting riots. While it is true that there are many who are getting openly violent with the bad conditions, that perception of hostility has impacted many innocent people who are desperately trying to survive.
Discrimination of this type in Taihi is hardly new. When the slaves of Taihi revolted, the moon station was one of the lushest and most wealthy colonies in the New System. But Val convinced her allies to create an embargo on Taihi until its people paid costly reparations, because the liberation of slaves set a "dangerous precedent."
The aid that does come through does not provide the help the Taihians need. Citizens interviewed spoke of a need for earth-moving equipment to clear destroyed building and digging graves for the quickly putrefying bodies trapped underneath. They've spoken of the need for clean water, clothes and tents. These have been provided to some, but not all and not enough. Some towns affected by the impact have reported that aid workers have thrown small breads out of hovering helicopters.
In the weeks since this horrible tragedy things have gone from staggering to exhausting to humiliating. And the way things look now, things in Taihi will only get worse.
