While the Saliban's latest attack on Kroy supply lines is troubling, there's a reason why they have become so bold.
A recent attack on Kroy supply routes, in the streets of a major Sanganistani spaceport, has brought to light an increasing divide between rich and poor Sanganistan system.
Saliban forces attacked a Kroy transport, and took 80% of the supplies it was delivering to Kroy troops. The Kroy and its allies have created new docking procedures for incoming supplies, but no one seems to be asking the hard questions. Saliban attacks on Kroy transports are routine on the off-planet routes, but this is the first time the hijacking has happened in a docking station.
How is it that Saliban forces could so boldly hijack supplies directly inside the spaceport?
It is because this unusual attack represents the growing discontent of the Sanganistani people. Those Sanganistani citizens who have spoken about the hijacking say its location is not surprising. The people of Sanganistan increasingly believe that the Kroy have used the Saliban insurgents as a flimsy excuse to establish themselves in the system. The Kroy’s focus on the Sanganistan’s Saliban-controlled continents is much needed and appreciated by its people. But the Kroy have started to make advances towards Sanganistan’s government, under the excuse of controlling the Saliban. To the Sangani, it seems an attempt to invade a sovereign station, something the Kroy has done in the past.
And the Kroy presence is seriously threatening the safety of the Sanganistani people. Kroy's use of remote controlled drone bombers have killed or injured hundreds of innocent civilians.
The children of Sanganistan are educated for a steep fee or not at all. The women of Sanganistan, unable to leave their homes, do not know when the next drone attack is coming, and where - if anywhere - they can flee for safety. And those without resources have little means of improving their situations. The job market is practically wiped out so young Sanganistani people cannot get work.
In short, for those Sangani who are not wealthy, it is now virtually impossible to have the basic necessities of a good life. And the divide between wealthy and poor is rapidly growing.
The wealthy of Sanganistan gotten richer, even as its average citizen has not. Why? The troubles with the Saliban play a part, but should not cause the rift to be this severe. It is well-known that the Kroy have been giving billions to Sanganistani people for reconstruction and development. Yet, the Kroy have done this by giving their funds directly to the Sanganistani leaders. Those funds have not fully trickled down to the people themselves. In fact, no one can say precisely where the Kroy money is or what it is being spent on.
But the wealth divide may be caused by a far more devious Kroy scheme. The Kroy have long since funneled money into projects to rebuild infrastructure that was destroyed in Kroy conflicts. And increasingly the Baronage is selling off parts of the off-planet services it offers - like rebuilding efforts – to Moguls located outside of Sanganistan.
This might seem to be a good idea at first, putting the task of rebuilding into the hands of the very people who do it for a living. But Moguls exist to make money and not to enrich the lives of the locals. And while conventional wisdom states that true growth can only happen during stability, the Moguls have increasingly found ways to create lasting profit in discord. As a result, there's no discouragement to having the war last longer and cost more lives.
Experts equate this private-sector struggle in Sanganistan to the Terra Restorative Initiative. The human race needs certain equipment to restore planet Earth to livable conditions. But rival barons still regularly come in and find a reason to destroy the equipment – essentially sabotaging the project they have created – in order to bid for the option to do it all over again.
These intricate political systems have added to the discontent that is making this war so difficult to win. And Kroy may be shooting itself in the foot by doing so. With a lack of options, loved ones increasingly dying, and a seemingly lack of anything to live for, the young people of Sanganistan have become increasingly desperate and angry. As a result, the Saliban is getting more and more recruits willing to die to put a dent in the Kroy's armor.
