The latest bad news in aggressive flu strands increasingly seems to be an excuse to overreact.

It used to be that the cold and flu season was a nuisance, not a threat. But as the latest potential pandemic has taken over the collective consciousness, the manners and morals of the Kroy have become infected.

The last official galactic pandemic illness was 8191 flu. It was contained as the germ theory of disease became more widespread. Medical professionals have since taken the lessons of the 8191 flu and translated them into procedures that have helped millions… with one unintended consequence. There is no way to completely eliminate bacteria, even the best disinfectants can only promise a 99% effectiveness rate. And any virus that survives will adapt, mutate, and become resilient against previous forms of treatment. Tests have also proven that modern bacteria and viruses are becoming increasingly immune to penicillin. It’s because of these factors that scientists believe the next deadly galactic pandemic illness is coming.

So, when unusually strong or adaptable viral strands are discovered, health officials have tried to educate the public about the potential threat.

The CCD and HOW both advertise how to prevent the 1N1H virus, the newest possible pandemic. As vaccines have become available, regional government websites have shown where you can get free preventative shots.

Unfortunately, the environment of open information has provided news-sources with enough unnerving facts to encourage an environment of hysteria.

It’s been widely reported that there have been 114 child deaths in Kroy due to 1N1H in the last seven months. There have been numerous reports in the last week of an unusual ‘spike’ in child deaths - this past month, 43 Kroy children died from complications due to the virus.

But with 96% of Kroy holdings claiming ‘widespread’ cases of 1N1H, 114 deaths aren’t alarmingly high.  In fact, 2/3rds of those child fatalities had pre-existing medical conditions. The virus has not mutated yet, so current treatments for the virus are still effective. 30 million doses of the vaccine have become available today, ready to be shipped anywhere in the Kroy holdings. And 10 million more doses will be produced this week alone.

But the idea of a potential pandemic has started to encourage unpleasant behavior towards those who are sick.

Businesses of all sizes have put policies of strict sick leave in place for anyone who may be infected. But since most of Kroy is still in the midst of a recession “Presenteeism”, or working while ill out of fear for your job, is rampant. Professional stress levels have risen considerably as those who are in good health try to avoid or punish those who are coming in sick.

And it’s not just individuals who are being blamed for being infectious. When news first began to spread last year that the 1N1H flu had it's origins in Mehjico, the Chungese government quarantined 70 Mehjican tourists. There was no solid basis for the quarantine besides the tourist's planet of origin. The tourists were only released when the Mehjican government paid to fly them home.

Some precautions are necessary. The timeless act of sharing your candy and bobbing for apples were both discouraged this Halloween. Communal bowls for chips and party snacks will be discouraged during the upcoming Winter Festivals. But with a successful vaccine developed and poised to prevent catastrophe, a potential pandemic is no excuse for vindictive behavior. Those who are ill deserve more sympathy than scorn.

Being a victim of the cold and flu season is nuisance enough.
